Criminal defence in South America
Among the many specialisations of ILA’s lawyers is criminal defence in South American countries, with a particular focus on extradition cases.
It is no secret to anyone that the international criminal law firm International Lawyers Associates is the offspring of the practice of lawyer Alexandro Maria Tirelli, the first European criminal lawyer to specialise as an expert in extradition and international criminal law since the early 2000s, gaining experience in major drug trafficking trials, held both in Italy and EU Member States, and in Latin American countries.
The study of extradition cases and those held before International Courts have increased the expertise of Tirelli and all the lawyers on the staff of International Lawyers, who now count on the support of a network made up of the best professionals and university professors on the Latin American continent.
Mentioning the trial against the generals of the Argentine Junta, the one against the dictator Noriega, the defence cases of the Colombian Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel, might seem a self-celebratory and marketing act of little elegance, but they give a concrete sense of the great capacity of our team of criminal lawyers and experts in international law. All our lawyers speak Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian and French fluently.
ILA: criminal defence in all Latin American countries
The law firm specialises in international criminal law and, in cases with Latin America, has been involved in countless extradition-related trials.
Extradition from Italy to Central America
As far as Central America is concerned, we ask site visitors to consult the special section dedicated to criminal defence in Mexico, given the particular interest that International Lawyers Associates devotes to legal cases involving this country.
Our lawyers are experts in criminal defence and extradition in the countries of Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Antilles, Santo Domingo, Cayman Islands, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua.
Our law firm has been operating for years in Panama, recalling the Finmeccanica affair, the trial for the death of Panamanian Minister of Justice Spadafora, of Italian origin, whose family was defended by Alexandro Maria Tirelli.

Our law firm does not deal with matters pertaining to the Republic of Cuba, except in cases of extreme urgency, humanitarian assistance and first necessity.

More specifically, ILA’s lawyers are experts in criminal defence and extradition in Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia.
Years of experience in the South American continent make our partners and associates the absolute leaders in the field. Our lawyers, in addition to their interest in the criminal and international fields, have dedicated themselves to advocacy and legal assistance related to delicate issues of recognition of Italian and Spanish citizenship, as well as intervention in complicated succession probate matters.

Italy's Extradition with Brazil
The legal defence and extradition to Brazil, which has been the focus of lawyer Alexandro Maria Tirelli’s professional attention for more than twenty years, and which is also linked to that country by very strong family ties, deserves a separate discussion. The firm has the capacity to provide defence and legal aid in every single state of the Brazilian Federation, and in almost every city of the green-gold country.
Not only in the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, but also in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and Paranà, in Florianopolis, in the entire state of Minas Gerais, in Vitoria, in the state of Bahia and along the north-east; important activities have been carried out in Brasilia, Manaus, Belem do Parà, Fortaleza and Recife.
Needless to mention, most of the trial defences have dealt with the endemic phenomenon of drug trafficking and money laundering; important trials have also included in-depth studies of international and bilateral extradition conventions, on the occasion of the capture of very important financial, political and banking figures.
Lawyer Alexandro Maria Tirelli was even an advisor to the Brazilian federal government in an important case concerning the arrest warrant of a well-known South American financier of the Banca do Brasil. The lawyer has also been the counsel for the Brazilian Catholic Church, notably in 2014, when International Lawyers Associates succeeded in having the logo of the 2014 World Cup Football Championship changed, guilty of improperly using the image of Christ the Redeemer.
